On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, the European Parliament (EP) adopted the REPowerEU plan, with a total value of 20 billion euros, in non-refundable grants, of which 1.39 billion euros are due to Romania in order to finance projects in the field of energy, until 2026.
REPowerEU includes measures with which EU countries should reduce their dependence on fossil fuels from Russia. The objectives of the plan are saving energy, producing clean energy and diversifying energy sources.
The plan is based on three pillars: diversification, saving and accelerating the transition to clean energy.
The rapporteurs of the European Parliament for REPowerEU were the Romanian MEPs Siegfried Mureşan (PPE) and Dragoş Pîslaru (Renew) and the Spanish MEP Eider Gardiazabal Rubial (S&D).
EP officials believe that by approving this funding, member countries will receive considerable help on their way to a sustainable economy.
