Romania Strengthens Its Energy Security with €260 Million

Massive investments in smart electricity transmission and distribution networks, fully funded through European grants.

To support the energy transition and resolve current bottlenecks in the electricity infrastructure, Romania is launching a new project call worth a total of €260 million. The initiative aims to modernize the national grid with smart technologies and boost its capacity to integrate renewable energy sources efficiently.

As recently announced by Marcel Boloș, Romania’s Minister of Investments and European Projects (MIPE), the country will receive €260 million for investments in smart electricity transmission and distribution networks. These funds are expected to address key issues that have affected Romania’s energy infrastructure in recent years.

Each beneficiary may receive up to €50 million in 100% non-reimbursable funding, with no co-financing required, and project applications must be submitted by December 31, 2025.

“This week, we are launching one of the most important calls for energy-related projects: for investments in smart transmission and distribution networks. Romania is producing more and more renewable energy, but the current grid needs help to distribute it efficiently,” said Minister Boloș.

He further emphasized:

“This is a fundamental requirement for Romania’s energy security, for economic competitiveness, and for meeting the country’s carbon emission reduction goals. We are talking about the grid’s ability to keep up with today’s realities: decentralized generation, growing demand, and climate pressures.”

Industry analysts believe this capital injection will help reduce losses in the grid, ensure more stable operation of the national system, and improve the integration of renewable energy production.
