Recent investments and accompanying legislation clearly indicate Romania's steadfast commitment to the path toward a green economy.
By 2030, which means in the next seven years, Romania intends to invest over 17 billion euros in energy production, with a significant portion of the financing expected to come from the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate Change (PNIESC), thus aiming to become a significant regional player in this part of Europe.
At the forefront of investments are solar energy projects, which are expected to become the dominant force in the system, surpassing the installed capacity of hydroelectric plants, followed by investments in wind energy and gas-fired power plants.
According to officials from the Ministry of Energy, the revised version of the PNIESC represents the true energy strategy of Romania.
Compared to the PNIESC variant from 2021, there is a significant difference regarding renewable energies. Thus, while the share of RES for the year 2030 was set at 30.7%, in the new PNIESC variant, renewable energies should reach 36% by 2030.
Of course, this entails massive investments in green energy, which will account for 47% of Romania's installed capacity in energy production.
According to a statement on the Ministry of Energy's website: "Romania considers domestic energy production as the most important objective for ensuring national energy security. Regarding electricity production, Romania aims to maintain its diversified energy mix while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions through sustained growth in renewable energy production capacities. The objective for 2030 is to achieve an installed electricity production capacity of 30.4 GW, marking a 47% increase compared to 2019, for internal electricity production."
