In Romania, the Contracts for Difference (CfD) Auction Starts Successfully
Polish Companies Bet on the Romanian Market with Five CfD Projects Won
According to analysts, the local energy market can boast a significant success with the completion of the first Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction.
As a result, ten wind farms and eleven solar parks were declared winners in this auction—a premiere for the local energy market—which provides investors in green energy with a new state aid scheme offering mutually beneficial advantages for both producers and consumers.
In the first auction organized by Romanian authorities, Polish companies secured a significant share of the winning solar projects, obtaining guaranteed prices for the next 15 years.
At the December 2024 CfD auction, the Poles managed to secure a guaranteed energy price for 15 years for five of the eleven winning solar projects through their company R.Power.
According to R.Power's team on LinkedIn: “R.Power triumphed in Romania’s first renewable energy auction. We won contracts for a total capacity of 85 MW across five projects. The largest project is 55 MW, the contracts have a duration of 15 years, and the projects are planned to be operational by 2026.”
The support schemes provided by the Romanian state, combined with the high potential of renewable energy, make Romania a priority destination for the expansion of foreign companies.
The list of 21 winning projects also includes the Romanian company Electrica SA, whose majority shareholder is the Ministry of Energy.
Through the CfD auction, the maximum guaranteed price was set at 78 euros/MWh for solar energy and 82 euros/MWh for wind energy. The average price at which the contracts were signed was 50.5 euros/MWh for solar energy and 68.4 euros/MWh for wind energy.
To finance the support scheme, the Ministry of Energy has 3 billion euros available from the Modernization Fund.
